Faïence de Moustiers

* The earthenware produced in Moustiers had the reputation of being "the finest in the kingdom" at the time of Louis XIV. In Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, earthenware is not just a craft, it’s a veritable cultural heritage. Renowned throughout France and far beyond, it symbolises the elegance, precision and identity of the village. Recognisable by its distinctive designs wich usually represent folklore, fantastic beasts and exotic sceneries.

* La faïence produite à Moustiers avait la réputation d'être "la plus fine du royaume" au temps de Louis XIV. Aujourd'hui encore à Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, la faïence est plus qu'un artisanat mais un véritable héritage culturel. Renommée à travers la France et bien au delà, elle symbolise l'élégance, la précision et l'identité du village. On peut la reconnaître à ses dessins particuliers qui représentent en général le folklore, des animaux fantastiques ou des scènes exotiques.

Delft Aardenwerk

 * Delft earthenware. Also known as Delft Blue. After getting acquainted with the refined Chinese porcelain in the golden age (1600-1700) potteries in Europe tried to recreate this beautiful pottery. This happened in Delft, among others places, where the world-famous Delft Blue pottery became very similar to Chinese porcelain. Delftware is distinguished by a layer of tin glaze that has been placed over the earthenware. Recognisable by its designs wich usually represent peacefull landscapes, farm animals, windmills, sea with ships and even sea monsters. 

* Faïence de Delft, aussi connue sous la dénomination de Bleu de Delft. La mise en concurrence de la faïencerie EU avec celle raffinée de Chine durant l'âge d'or (1600-1700) a poussé les fabricants d'Europe a chercher à la reproduire. Delft entre autre places a su en tirer sa renomée avec la création de sa très célèbre faïence bleue, très similaire en couleur et en technique de sa concurrente Chinoise. Elle se caractérise par un émaillage très fin par dessus la couleur. On la reconnaît à ses thèmes classiques qui en général représentent des paysages calmes et agricoles; animaux de ferme, moulins et bien sûr la mer, bâteaux et même monstres marins.

Garden of Eden

* Inspired by typical dutch painting depicting the garden of eden with luxious landscape and lots of animals, this drawing links France (Provence) to the Netherlands. 

 

* Inspiré par les peintures flamandes typiques représentant le jardin d'eden avec des paysages luxuriants et beaucoup d'animaux, ce dessin fait le lien entre la France (Provence) et les Pays-Bas.

The exhibition took place at  @boerderijhetgagelgat  , wich have a room full of Delft tile & earthenware.

L'exposition a eu lieu à @boerderijhetgagelgat , qui a une pièce remplie de tuiles de Delft et de faïencerie.

On 13 and 14 June, @paardverzameld presents the fifth edition of its annual exhibition at De Paardenkamp, held at Boerderij Het Gagelgat in Soest.

An international group of artists from the Paard Verzameld Collective presents new work, developed through years of engagement with this place. What began with Verhalenvertellers and evolved through Nobel, Van Muze tot Meesterwerk, and Verbinding now comes together in Bron van Inspiratie.

The horses of De Paardenkamp form the starting point. Observation, repetition, and proximity lie at the foundation of the work. A jubilee edition with new work, a reflection on previous editions, and all artists present.

2026 Year of the Fire Horse

Today marks the start of the year of the fire horse, a rare event that I wanted to celebrate with an inspiration from Japan...

Old VS New - Paard Verzameld contemporary collective Challenge n°77

Here's my reply to the challenge n°77 of the @paardverzameldcollective "The horse that carried you through".

<A reflection on a horse that offered strength or direction during a defining moment this year.>

Commençons l'année avec un nouveau (et intéressant) concept de dessin...

Voici ma réponse au challenge n°77 du @paardverzameldcollective "The horse that carried you through".

<Une réflexion sur un cheval qui vous a offert force et courage pendant un moment défini cette année> 

The reply is quite obvious as it's the same mare that does that for me since 12 years now - Amira. But also it's more nuanced because this year I've discovered a new mare - Kalinka.
I cannot choose between the two because they represent a different spirit and a different kind of thoughts and that why I got the idea of two separate drawing that would works together to makes one.

So you've got it, it's old vs new, familiar feeling that help you or fresh ones that help you in another way.

La réponse est plutôt évidente vu que c'est la même jument qui me tire vers le haut depuis 12 ans maintenant - Amira. Mais également on pourrait y apporter plus de nuances car cette année j'ai découvert une nouvelle jument - Kalinka.
Je ne pouvais pas vraiment choisir entre les deux car elles représentent un esprit différent et m'apportent un soutien émotionnel très différent.C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de faire deux dessins différents qui pourraient fusionner en un seul.

Donc vous l'avez compris c'est la dualité entre ce qui est ancien et ce qui est nouveau, le sentiment familier qui vous réconforte et les sensations nouvelles qui vous réveillent.

Amira; she represent the "nostalgic" part of my life. My first horse, the dream coming true and I've grown so much for her. She's always in my mind, leading my way. Since I cannot ride her anymore, I've drawn her/us so many times as it always reminds me memories and create pictures that we weren't able to do in real. Always bittersweet but a way to move forward and keep the dream alive.
For this challenge, Amira is depicted in her actual retirement stables with recognizable mountains in the background and painted with watercolors - my usual medium, a choice motivated by that idea of a usual, comfortable and pleasant idea that cheers you up and help you go through.

Amira; elle représente la nostalgie. Mon premier cheval, le rêve ultime qui devenait réalité et qui m'a obligée à grandir et à devenir une personne plus responsable. Elle est toujours dans mon esprit, car la plupart de mes décisions découlent directement de sa présence dans ma vie. Depuis que j'ai dû renoncer à l'équitation avec elle, j'ai dû réinventer les envies que j'avais pour nous et une partie est désormais dessinée à défaut d'être réalisée en vrai. 
Pour ce dessin, Amira est représentée dans son environnement actuel (les écuries où elle coule sa retraite) et peinte à l'aquarelle - mon médium habituel. Un choix motivé par cette idée de quotidien, confortable et plaisant qui vous réconforte.

Kalinka; at the opposite represent the "new" part of my life. She's here to take Amira's succession and I've been through a lot of different emotions with her this year, including fear, joy and pride. But definely all the goods moments we had together really lighted a new flame of hope in my heart.
For this challenge, Kalinka is depicted with a iconic -for me- mountain in the background. One of Amira's past stable (some of our best years) was right in the foot of this mountain, so it's symbolic as I always looked at it from my windows knowing she was there. I've choose to paint the drawing with acrylic gouache wich like Kalinka, is a new experience that I enjoy so far.

Kalinka; à l'opposé représente la nouveauté dans ma vie. Elle est là pour prendre la succession d'Amira, dans le sens où c'est le cheval avec qui je dois trouver un parteneriat sous la selle désormais. Avec elle j'ai expérimenté toute sorte de sentiments cette année comme la peur, la joie, la fierté. Mais définitivement tout nos bons moments ont vraiment ravivé une petite flamme dans mon coeur.
Pour ce dessin, Kalinka est représentée sous une montagne iconique pour moi. Il fut un temps où l'écurie d'Amira était juste au pied de cette montagne et quand je la regardais depuis la fenêtre je savais qu'elle était là... (certaines de nos meilleurs années d'ailleurs). J'ai choisi de réaliser ce dessin à la gouache acrylique car, comme Kalinka, cela représente une expérience de dessin nouvelle que j'apprécie (même si c'est moins maîtrisé).

Radiating Horse - Paard Verzameld contemporary collective Challenge n°75

 Here's my reply to the challenge n°75 of the @paardverzameldcollective "What's in a Word"

"Our most recent challenge centred on the theme Lumen, working with luminosity and a limited autumn inspired palette. Over the course of seven days, our artists explored atmosphere, composition, and serenity rather than detail, producing loose sketches alongside a final atmospheric artwork."

Voici ma réponse au challenge n°75 du @paardverzameldcollective "What's in a Word"

 "Cette fois le mot clef est Lumen, nos artistes sont invités à travailler avec la luminosité et une palette de couleur limitée automnale. Pendant les 7 jours de travail, il leur faudra explorer une atmosphère et une composition qui fera ressentir la sérénité."

-Radiating Horse;

It's funny because when I sketched this I saw it cristal clear in term of use of the colours. But I wasn't picturing, until I see the final result that in the end it would be the horse that will glow. That's a twist!!

Putting the accent on the shadow when the subject is light? Maybe I think a little too much out of the box, but still after much and much hesitation I choose to do it. In a way, isn't the shadows a proof of light?
And in the end... my choices created an unexpected light coming from the horse itself.

-Cheval Rayonnant;

C'est drôle parce que quand j'ai mis au point le croquis, je voyais très clairement comment j'allais utiliser les couleurs. Mais je n'imaginais pas à quel point le résultat ferait briller le cheval. C'était inattendu!!

Mettre l'accent sur les ombres quand le sujet c'est la lumière? Je pense peut-être de manière étrange ou inattendue mais j'ai décidé de le faire quand même. Dans un sens, les ombres sont générées par la lumière, donc? Et au final la lumière vient du sujet.

-Palette for the challenge; I broke open my new (not so new) acryl gouaches I got after @signe.of.horses.illustrations suggested them to me. I was like; if I was bold enought to assume that difficult subject, I am bold enough to finally gave them a try?

-Palette imposée; j'ai décidé d'y aller avec mes nouvelles (pas si nouvelles) gouaches acrylique que j'ai eu après qu'on me les ai suggérées. Je me suis dit que si j'étais assez courageuse pour dessiner un sujet aussi difficile, je pouvais bien être assez courageuse pour me lancer dans cette nouvelle technique.

The Pink Granite Coast - Paard Verzameld contemporary collective Challenge n°74

Here's my reply to the challenge n°74 of the @paardverzameldcollective "A Work of Art is a World in Itself"

"In our most recent challenge, the theme was ‘Numazaki Pasture’ by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950), a celebrated Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker. Over seven days, our artists explored atmosphere, composition, and serenity over detail, creating loose sketches alongside one final atmospheric artwork."

Voici ma réponse au challenge n°74 du @paardverzameldcollective "A Work of Art is a World in Itself"

"Le thème de ce challenge tirait son inspiration du tableau ‘Numazaki Pasture’ par Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950), un peintre Japonais spécialisé dans l'estampe. Les artistes du collectifs ont été invité à réfléchir à la composition, la sérénité plutôt que le détail pour exécuter un dessin atmosphérique."

-The Pink Granite Coast; 

The reference image provided for the challenge of course is a strong one, I had a hard time to consider doing something else than a herd of horses... but well, I wanted to feel the atmospheric side of the challenge.
And then, the idea 💡
My riding mare affix is "du granite rose" because she's from the pink granite coast. Actually one of the most beautiful place I've ever seen and definely a large space that fitted my ambition... 

-La Côte de Granite Rose;

L'image de référence de ce challenge était très forte, j'ai eu du mal à m'en détacher et à considérer de dessiner autre chose qu'un troupeau de chevaux... mais je voulais surtout mettre l'accent sur le côté atmosphérique de l'exercice.
Et d'un coup, une idée 💡
L'affixe de la jument que je monte est "du granite rose" car elle est originaire de là bas. C'est une des plus belle place qu'il m'ait jamais été donné de voir et il définitivement un lieu à la hauteur de mes ambitions...

The real challenge here was working with a limited palette (imposed) thoses colours were difficult to match. I had a hard time founding a balance, but the result is pretty enough.

La vraie difficulté rencontrée a été de travailler avec la palette de couleurs (imposée) qui était difficile à faire fonctionner pour moi. Mais finalement j'ai réussi à obtenir quelque chose d'assez joli.
